How much does SEO actually cost in India in 2026
The direct answer: SEO in India in 2026 costs between ₹15,000 and ₹5,00,000 a month, depending on scope, competitive vertical, and where your business is in the growth curve. Most serious mid-market work sits at ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000 a month. Anyone quoting under ₹15,000 is not doing SEO in any meaningful sense. Anyone quoting over ₹5,00,000 is charging enterprise premium, which may or may not be worth it depending on whether you actually need enterprise scope.
That is the whole answer. The rest of this post is why the ranges are what they are, what determines where your business falls in them, and how to tell whether a proposal you are looking at is fair.
Why the range is so wide
Because "SEO" is not one deliverable. It is at least five distinct workstreams that different agencies bundle differently, and any of them can be done at three different levels of ambition.
The five workstreams: technical SEO (crawl, index, Core Web Vitals, schema); on-page SEO (title tags, meta descriptions, content structure, internal linking); content production (the actual writing that ranks); off-page SEO (backlinks, digital PR); and reporting and attribution (Search Console, GA4, dashboards, monthly reviews).
The three levels of ambition: fix what is broken (audit and remediation); maintain what is already ranking (steady-state retainer); actively acquire new rankings (growth-mode content and link investment).
A ₹25,000-a-month SEO retainer that fixes what is broken on a small local business site is genuinely good value. The same ₹25,000-a-month retainer promising to grow a national D2C brand's organic revenue by 40 per cent is a scam. Both quotes exist in the market. Both use the same phrase.
Honest ranges by scope
Here is the same set of ranges I laid out in the broader agency-pricing essay, narrowed specifically to SEO work.
Local SEO for a single-location business. ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 per month. Google Business Profile optimisation, local citations, reviews workflow, on-page SEO for 10 to 20 pages, monthly reporting. Right-sized for a clinic, restaurant, coaching centre, or professional service targeting one city. This is roughly the tier we run for many of our Patna-anchored engagements where the goal is qualified phone calls from the Google local pack.
Standard SEO retainer for a small to mid-market business. ₹40,000 to ₹1,00,000 per month. Everything in the local tier plus regular content production (typically 2 to 4 pieces a month), light off-page work, technical SEO monitoring, and monthly strategy calls. Right for a business doing ₹2 to 25 crore in annual revenue that wants steady organic growth.
Growth SEO for a serious mid-market or D2C brand. ₹1,00,000 to ₹2,50,000 per month. Content velocity moves to 8 to 12 pieces a month, dedicated link building, deep technical SEO with recurring audits, CRO on landing pages, and AEO and GEO retrofit work on the top pages — the work that makes your content citeable inside Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT, not only rankable inside classic Google. Right for a ₹25 to 100 crore business where organic is a real revenue channel.
Enterprise SEO for large multi-location or category-leader brands. ₹2,50,000 to ₹5,00,000 or higher per month. Multi-region SEO, dedicated technical resource, in-house content team management, custom dashboards, quarterly business reviews with the founder or CMO. Right for brands where SEO is one line in a marketing budget of more than ₹1 crore per month.
Beyond retainers: audits and one-off projects
Not every SEO engagement is a monthly retainer.
Comprehensive SEO audit with a written roadmap. ₹1,00,000 to ₹3,00,000 as a one-time fee. Two to four weeks of work. Technical crawl, keyword landscape, competitor analysis, content gap, backlink profile, prioritised roadmap for the next six months. Anyone charging ₹15,000 for this is exporting a Semrush report with two hours of commentary. A real audit takes real time. This is how we opened the Jagran Events engagement — a 19-page written audit before any contract was signed.
Site migration SEO. ₹1,50,000 to ₹5,00,000 as a one-off project. Domain migrations, platform migrations (WordPress to Shopify, Wix to a headless stack), URL restructures. This is a specialised project, not a retainer line item. If you are planning one and your current agency has not quoted separately for it, they are either underestimating the work or planning to underdeliver.
Content-only production. ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 per piece for founder-quality long-form. ₹5,000 to ₹12,000 per piece for template-driven service pages or programmatic SEO output. Both have their place. Neither is "SEO" on its own. Content without technical and off-page is just publishing.
What determines where your business actually falls
Four questions I ask on the first call.
How competitive is your vertical? Ranking for "digital marketing agency India" is a completely different exercise from ranking for "yoga classes Kanpur". The head term is a two-year investment fighting entrenched aggregators. The long-tail term can be won in six weeks. Same "SEO work". Wildly different cost and timeline.
How healthy is your existing site? A three-year-old WordPress site with clean architecture and good page speed is a very different starting point from a Wix site that has never been indexed properly. The first weeks of any real engagement are spent finding out. Sites that need a technical rebuild will push the retainer number up in months one to three because we are essentially doing two projects at once.
What is your content capacity? SEO in 2026 does not work without content. You can pay us to write it, or you can write it in-house and pay us less for strategy and technical. Both work. Businesses that pay for SEO but refuse to publish new content are going to be disappointed. It is worth being honest about this before you sign.
What is your patience horizon? Real SEO is a 6-to-12-month investment before you see revenue impact compound. If you need leads in 60 days, you need paid media, not organic. This is the single most common misalignment I see in first calls, and it is the reason so many businesses come away thinking "SEO does not work". SEO works. It just does not work on the timeline paid media does.
Red flags at the cheap end
Under ₹15,000 a month, one of three things is happening. You are getting a Fiverr freelancer marked up by a middleman. You are getting a template rolled out identically for fifty other clients. Or you are getting a report generator that runs a monthly Semrush audit and calls it a service.
Any agency promising "top-three rankings guaranteed in 90 days" is either lying or planning to rank you for keywords no one is actually searching for. Google itself explicitly warns against agencies that make ranking guarantees. Real SEO people know they cannot guarantee rank because they do not control the algorithm.
Any proposal that does not include a discovery period before quoting a full scope is a red flag. If someone is willing to promise you a scope and a price before seeing your Search Console, your GA4, and your current site's technical state, they are quoting a template, not a strategy.
Red flags at the expensive end
At the enterprise end, the failure mode is different. You are usually not being scammed. You are being over-served.
A ₹4,00,000-a-month retainer with a full account-manager tier and a weekly PowerPoint is not a better SEO retainer than a ₹1,50,000-a-month engagement with the founder on the call. It is a more expensive one. Some businesses need the account-management infrastructure. Most do not.
The other enterprise-end failure mode is scope creep dressed up as strategy. If your monthly deliverable includes thirty items of activity and none of them ladder to a specific ranking or revenue goal, you are paying for motion, not outcome. Ask your agency what the single biggest lever is for your organic growth in the next 90 days. If the answer is "we do everything and it all works together", find someone else.
What we charge, specifically
Since I am arguing for pricing transparency, I should practise it.
For a typical SEO engagement at Digital Legates, our retainer ranges are: ₹40,000 to ₹75,000 for a small business with a single site and a local focus; ₹80,000 to ₹1,50,000 for standard growth-mode SEO on a mid-market business site; and ₹1,50,000 to ₹3,00,000 for multi-workstream SEO combined with content, CRO, and AEO/GEO work.
These sit at roughly 40 to 60 per cent of the equivalent metro-agency quote for the same scope, for reasons that have to do with where we are based rather than with the quality of the work.
Audits are ₹1,25,000 to ₹2,50,000 depending on site size. Site migrations are quoted separately as projects.
We do not do "SEO from ₹9,999 a month". We do not do 90-day ranking guarantees. We do not do the AM-tier weekly-deck relationship. If any of those things are what you are looking for, we are the wrong shop and it is better we both figure that out on the first call.
What to do with this post if you are shopping around
Take the ranges here into any agency conversation you have this quarter. Ask them where their quote sits relative to the tier you actually need. Ask what is in and what is out. Ask what determines whether you slide up or down within the tier.
If you have never briefed an agency before, that link is the shortest useful thing I have written on how to make a good SEO brief.
And if you want the version of this conversation applied to your specific business — your current site, your vertical, your budget — send us a note. The first call is a discovery call, not a sales pitch. If we are not the right fit for what you are trying to do, I will tell you which shop is.
